Shock

Web www.EmergencyMedicalEd.com

Shock is a very common side-effect of bleeding, and left untreated can ultimately lead to death.

The shock syndrome is characterized by the bodies inability to supply oxygen to the cells in the body and as complicated as that process might be, the corrective action is rather simple. At the first aid level, the provider should position the patient on his/her back and raise the feet about 4 to 6 inches. If the environment is cool or cold, then maintain normal body temperature by covering the patient with a blanket. If the ground is cold, then consider putting a blanket under the patient as well. If it's warm or hot, consider trying to cool the patient by providing shade and lots of fresh air. Do not give the patient anything to drink, and be careful not to over-cool the patient. The goal here is to maintain normal body temperature. That's it! Keep the patient calm and wait for Medical Services to arrive.

Note from Mr. Corby:

Recently, the cost of maintaining these pages has started to "bite" into my budget.  I'm not complaining, mind you, the amount of self-satisfaction that I get from your comments about the usefulness of this site, is well worth the expense.  One way or another, I will continue to maintain and update these pages for as long as I draw breath.  If any of you would like to help by making a small non tax deductible donation (God Bless You,) mail your support to:  Emergency Medical Ed, 2053 NW 79 Ave  #26211, Miami, FL. 33122.  Thank you for your help in keeping this site going.
