The Human Body

Web www.EmergencyMedicalEd.com

A photograph of an elderly male patient sitting on the edge of an examination table with an exposed upper torso. The patient is "tripoding," a position slightly forward of upright, with hands on knees, attempting to utilize gravity to help inflate the lungs during respiratory distress. Also apparent is intercostal retraction where the anterior surface of the chest is "sucked" in-between the ribs during "forced" respirations.

Note the intercostal retractions (especially at the base of the neck,) and the position of the hands (a position known as 'tripodding.')

Note from Mr. Corby:

Recently, the cost of maintaining these pages has started to "bite" into my budget.  I'm not complaining, mind you, the amount of self-satisfaction that I get from your comments about the usefulness of this site, is well worth the expense.  One way or another, I will continue to maintain and update these pages for as long as I draw breath.  If any of you would like to help by making a small non tax deductible donation (God Bless You,) mail your support to:  Emergency Medical Ed, 2053 NW 79 Ave  #26211, Miami, FL. 33122.  Thank you for your help in keeping this site going.
